Alfie’s Journey: From Neglect to a Loving Home

Having had rescue dogs before, we knew that when we returned to the UK from Saudi Arabia, we wanted to welcome another dog into our family. It was important to find the right fit, and after much thought, we decided a Poodle would be ideal. Their intelligence, affectionate nature, and hypoallergenic coat made them a perfect choice. So, as we planned our move back, we also began searching for a rescue Poodle.

One evening, a friend reached out about a Poodle in need of a home. It seemed like the perfect opportunity—until we realized this wasn’t a UK rescue. This little dog was in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and desperately needed help.

Dogs in Saudi Arabia have only recently gained popularity as pets. Traditionally seen as working animals or guard dogs, their place in family homes is still evolving. This particular Poodle had been purchased as a gift for a 12-year-old girl, shipped from Ukraine as a young pup. However, when the novelty wore off, and he didn’t behave as she had hoped, he was locked away in a cellar, fed leftover rice by the maid, and neglected for two years.

With the help of a local pet rescue team, we went to see him. On a hot summer evening, the maid brought him out, and his first reaction was to run wildly around the yard. The girl grew frustrated at his lack of response, but it was clear he was simply overwhelmed. He was skin and bone, his coat had been shaved to remove severe matting, and he looked frail—but there was a spark in him. Despite everything, he was curious, energetic, and eager for affection.

The rescue team suggested I take some time to decide, but for me, there was no question. I wasn’t leaving him there another night. With no supplies ready at home, we scooped him up, brought him into the car, and drove away, naming him Alfie on the way.

Overcoming Challenges

It wasn’t long before we discovered Alfie had an issue with his hind leg. It would frequently dislocate, especially when he jumped down from furniture. After several vet visits, an operation was attempted to strengthen the muscles around the socket, but the damage was too severe. X-rays showed that the problem had existed for a long time, with significant calcification in the joint. A second surgery was performed to remove the ball from the tibia, but this only caused him to trip over his own leg. With great reluctance, the decision was made to amputate.

Within a week of surgery, Alfie was racing around the garden as if nothing had changed. In fact, he was happier—full of energy, curiosity, and mischief. His loving and cheeky personality shone through, and he became a completely different dog.

A New Life in the UK

After 18 months with us in Saudi, it was time to move home. In December 2022, Alfie flew back to the UK. His first experience of snow in January was a joy to watch, though he still seeks out sunny spots wherever he can. When the weather allows, you’ll often find him basking in the warmth, just as he did back in Saudi.

Alfie’s journey—from neglect to a cherished family member—has been one of resilience, adaptability, and trust. He’s a daily reminder of the power of patience, love, and second chances.
